Center for the History of Society and Culture

The Center for the History of Society and Culture (CHSC) is a research unit of the University of Coimbra, based at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (http://chsc.uc.pt). It is mainly composed of historians, from different fields of expertise, and also includes researchers from other Social and Human Sciences. Heir to the Center of Historical Studies created in the 1970s, the Center for the History of Society and Culture was founded in 1976, and its first director was Doctor José Sebastião da Silva Dias. Initially attached to the National Institute of Scientific Research, it later established ties with the National Board for Scientific Research and, since 1997, with the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. During the last decades, this center has developed a solid and proficient scientific work, expressed in published studies, in the integration in research networks, in the participation in multiple national and international initiatives and in the support to research. To conduct many of the activities it promotes or in which it participates, the CHSC has cooperated in various manners with different public and private institutions of the civil society. This collaboration is expressed in the organization of seminars or colloquia and conferences, in the participation in projects, in the publication of works and other initiatives, and in the elaboration of protocols, partnerships or other types of associations. The CHSC publishes the Journal of the Center for the History of Society and Culture, an annual scientific journal written in Portuguese. Its articles are subjected to a preliminary assessment carried out by an external arbitration committee. This journal was founded in 2001 with the main goal of publicizing the historical studies developed within the scope of the Center for the History of Society and Culture, an R&D unit registered with the Foundation for Science and Technology. The journal’s contents include unpublished historical texts (from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age), a news section on scientific activities and critical reviews of books in the field of History. The journal accepts articles from full researchers and collaborators of the Center for the History of Society and Culture, as well as from any other historians from outside this institution. Special encouragement is made to the participation of all those who, in one way or another, cooperate or develop networking activities with this Research Center.
