Churches and Frescoes from the Árpád Era

The Upper-Tisza-Region is situated at the crossroads of three historic areas: Transylvania, Upper Hungary and the Hungarian Great Plain. As a cultural region, it boasts a rich and diverse built and intangible cultural heritage. It is a storehouse of hidden treasures, where several exciting and spectacular sites await the visitor.  This is also the land of medieval churches, providing insight into the wealth of medieval ecclesiastical heritage, where the Gothic era and the Reformation Age have bequeathed a unique cultural heritage to future generations. These mostly small village churches have maintained their medieval form.  What renders them unique are the frescoes that cover large areas that were hidden under the lime wash for centuries.
